Introduction
When we think of Uranus, we probably picture a planet with an intense blue color, similar to how it appeared in images taken by the Voyager spacecraft in the mid-1980s. However, a new study by a team of astronomers, including experts from the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aeroespacial (INTA) and the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU), challenges this long-held belief. The Uranus Color Mystery
For decades, it has been widely believed that Uranus has an intense blue color, while Neptune is a lighter blue. This belief was based on images taken by the Voyager spacecraft, which showed Uranus with a deep blue hue and Neptune with a lighter, turquoise color. The astronomers involved in the study analyzed images from various telescopes, including the Hubble Space Telescope and the Very Large Telescope (VLT) of the European Southern Observatory in Chile. They used two instruments on the Hubble Space Telescope, the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE), to determine the true colors of Uranus and Neptune.
The team first calibrated the images taken by the Voyager spacecraft, which had been in use for more than three decades. This allowed them to generate a more precise version of the classic photograph of Uranus. The researchers also found that Neptune is slightly bluer than Uranus, with a color closer to a clear blue.
