Accessing the Text Box Tool
The primary method to insert a text box involves using the standard menu bar. Open your document in LibreOffice Writer and ensure you are in the editing view. Click on the Insert menu located at the top of the window. From the dropdown list, hover over Text Box. A submenu will appear with options such as "Standard" or "Form Control." For most general use cases, select Standard. If you prefer using the toolbar, look for the drawing toolbar which may be hidden by default. Right-click on any empty area of the toolbar ribbon and check Drawing if it is not visible. The icon typically looks like a small rectangle with lines inside. Click this icon to activate the drawing mode directly.Drawing and Positioning the Box
Once the tool is active, your cursor will change to a crosshair. Move the mouse to the exact location on the page where you want the text box to begin. Click and hold the left mouse button. Drag the cursor diagonally to define the width and height of the box. Release the mouse button when the dimensions suit your needs. You can adjust the position later by clicking the border of the box and dragging it. To resize, click the box again and use the small square handles that appear at the corners and midpoints of the edges. Hold Shift while resizing to maintain the original aspect ratio if needed.Entering and Formatting Text
After drawing the box, the insertion point is automatically inside the text box. You can immediately start typing your content. If you need to edit existing text, simply click inside the box to activate it. Use standard formatting tools available in the toolbar, such as bold, italic, or font size changes, to style the text within the box. To exit the text box and return to the main document flow, click outside the box boundaries or pressEsc. The box remains selected until you click elsewhere. You can move the entire box without affecting the text inside by dragging its border.
Customizing Appearance
Right-click the text box to access detailed properties. Select Position and Size to set exact coordinates and dimensions. Choose Line and Filling to modify the border color, line style, or background fill. You can make the background transparent to blend the box with the document background. For advanced users, consider linking the text box to a master slide if working in Impress, though this guide focuses on Writer. Note that text boxes do not flow with paragraphs; they are floating objects. This makes them ideal for headers, footers, or side notes that must stay in a fixed position regardless of text edits above or below them.Related Resources
