In Linux, mounting external disks and partitions is a common practice for data storage and sharing. However, sometimes mount failures occur due to filesystem errors. In this article, we will discuss how to force an Ext4 filesystem check to resolve mount failures in Linux.
Mount Fails Due to Filesystem Errors...
When you try to mount an Ext4 filesystem, you might encounter errors such as:
$ sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
mount: /mnt: can't read superblock
This error occurs when the filesystem has been damaged or corrupted, and the superblock cannot be read. In such cases, you need to check and repair the filesystem using the Ext4 filesystem check utility.
Force Ext4 Filesystem Check
To force an Ext4 filesystem check, you can use the e2fsck command with the -f option. This option forces the check even if the filesystem appears clean.
$ sudo e2fsck -f /dev/sdb1
This command will check and repair the filesystem if necessary. Once the check is complete, you can try to mount the filesystem again:
$ sudo mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt
Automatically Check Ext4 Filesystems at Boot
You can also configure your Linux system to automatically check Ext4 filesystems at boot time. To do this, edit the /etc/fstab file and add the check option to the Ext4 mount point:
