Traffic Not Passing Through OPNsense Firewall on Hyper-V: Troubleshooting Steps
In this article, we will cover the steps to troubleshoot an issue where traffic is not passing through the OPNsense firewall on Hyper-V. We will assume that you have already set up the OPNsense virtual machine (VM) and connected the DMZ interface to the external network, internal network, and internal switches for your VMs. We will also assume that your VLANs are set up and working fine.
1. Check the Firewall Rules
The first step in troubleshooting traffic issues is to check the firewall rules. Make sure that you have allowed traffic to pass through the firewall by creating appropriate rules. You can check the firewall rules by navigating to Firewall > Rules in the OPNsense web interface.
2. Check the Interface Assignments
Make sure that the interfaces are assigned correctly in the OPNsense VM. You can check the interface assignments by navigating to Interfaces > Assignments in the OPNsense web interface.
3. Check the Virtual Switch Configuration
Make sure that the virtual switch configuration in Hyper-V is correct. You can check the virtual switch configuration by navigating to Virtual Switch Manager in the Hyper-V Manager.
4. Check the Network Adapter Configuration
Make sure that the network adapter configuration in the OPNsense VM is correct. You can check the network adapter configuration by navigating to Interfaces > (Select the interface) > Edit in the OPNsense web interface.
5. Check the Routing Table
Make sure that the routing table in the OPNsense VM is correct. You can check the routing table by navigating to Diagnostics > Routes in the OPNsense web interface.
6. Check the ARP Table
Make sure that the ARP table in the OPNsense VM is correct. You can check the ARP table by navigating to Diagnostics > ARP in the OPNsense web interface.
7. Check the Logs
Check the logs in the OPNsense VM to see if there are any errors or warnings. You can check the logs by navigating to System > Logs in the OPNsense web interface.
8. Check the System Settings
Make sure that the system settings in the OPNsense VM are correct. You can check the system settings by navigating to System > Settings in the OPNsense web interface.
9. Restart the OPNsense VM
If none of the above steps work, try restarting the OPNsense VM. This can often resolve issues with network traffic.
- Check the firewall rules
- Check the interface assignments
- Check the virtual switch configuration
- Check the network adapter configuration
- Check the routing table
- Check the ARP table
- Check the logs
- Check the system settings
- Restart the OPNsense VM
