Understanding DDR2-6400: Peak Bandwidth vs. Clock Speed
DDR2-6400 is a designation used to indicate the peak bandwidth data transfer rate of a memory module. It does not represent the clock speed of the module. The number "6400" in DDR2-6400 represents the theoretical maximum bandwidth that the memory module can achieve.
DDR2 Memory Technology
DDR2 (Double Data Rate 2) is a type of synchronous dynamic random-access memory (SDRAM) that is commonly used in computers. It is an improvement over the previous DDR (Double Data Rate) standard and offers higher bandwidth and lower power consumption. DDR2 memory modules use a clock speed that is twice the data rate, which allows for faster data transfer.
Bandwidth vs. Clock Speed
Bandwidth and clock speed are two different but related concepts in memory technology. Bandwidth refers to the amount of data that can be transferred in a given time period, while clock speed refers to the frequency at which the memory module operates.
In the case of DDR2-6400, the "6400" represents the peak bandwidth, which is the maximum amount of data that can be transferred in a second. This is not the same as the clock speed, which is the speed at which the memory module operates. The clock speed of a DDR2-6400 memory module is typically around 800 MHz, but the actual data transfer rate is twice this due to the use of double data rate technology.
