Customizing Mouse Cursor Animations in Windows 11

Microsoft's latest operating system, Windows 11, offers a variety of customization options for users, including the ability to change the appearance of the mouse cursor. While the default cursor designs are functional, some users may want to add a personal touch or increase visibility for accessibility purposes. This article covers how to create a custom mouse cursor set and make the link select cursor actually change when clicked.

Creating a Custom Mouse Cursor Set

To create a custom mouse cursor set in Windows 11, follow these steps:

1. Right-click on an empty area of the desktop and select "Personalize" from the context menu.

2. In the Personalization window, click on "Mouse pointer."

3. Click on "Open mouse pointer properties" at the bottom of the window.

4. In the Mouse Properties window, click on the "Browse" button and navigate to the folder containing your custom cursor designs.

5. Select the scheme file (.cur) or the individual cursor designs (.ani) that you want to use, and click "Open."

Note that individual cursor designs may not retain their animation effects when applied to the mouse pointer. To ensure the animation effect, it is recommended to use a scheme file that includes all required cursor designs with proper animation.

Making the Link Select Cursor Change When Clicked

By default, the link select cursor (a hand with a pointing finger) does not change when clicked in Windows 11. However, this behavior can be changed by editing the Windows Registry. Here are the steps:

1. Press "Win + R" to open the Run dialog box.

2. Type "regedit" and press Enter to open the Registry Editor.

3. Navigate to the following path:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Cursors
 

4. Locate the "Hand" key in the right pane, right-click on it, and select "Modify."

5. Change the "Value data" field to the path of the clicked hand cursor. For example:

   "C:\Windows\Cursors\aero_linkhand_click.cur"
    

6. Click "OK" and close the Registry Editor.

Note that editing the Windows Registry can cause system instability if done incorrectly. It is recommended to create a backup of the Registry before making changes.
