Reviving the AsRock G41C-GS Motherboard: USB/PS2 Port Issues

Title: Resurrecting an Old Motherboard: USB/PS2 Port Issues with AsRock G41C-GS

Introduction

In an attempt to breathe new life into an older motherboard, I decided to work with the AsRock G41C-GS. Although it's not a high-end model, I was determined to get it up and running. However, upon installation, I discovered that the USB and PS2 ports were not functioning as expected.

Investigating the Issue

I began by checking the BIOS settings, ensuring that the USB and PS2 controllers were enabled. However, this did not resolve the issue. I then turned to the internet for guidance, finding several potential solutions.

Solution 1: Jumper Settings

One common issue with older motherboards is incorrect jumper settings. I checked the motherboard manual and found that the PS2 ports required a specific jumper configuration. After making the necessary adjustments, I booted the system, but the PS2 ports still did not work.

Solution 2: USB 2.0 Hub

Next, I tried using a USB 2.0 hub to see if the issue was with the motherboard's USB ports directly. I connected the hub and a keyboard to it, but the keyboard did not respond. This indicated that the issue was not with the individual USB ports but with the USB controller itself.

Solution 3: BIOS Update

I decided to update the BIOS, hoping that it would resolve the issue. I downloaded the latest BIOS version from the AsRock website, created a bootable USB drive, and followed the instructions to update the BIOS. However, after the update, the USB and PS2 ports still did not work.

Solution 4: Reinstalling the Operating System

At this point, I decided to reinstall the operating system, thinking that the issue might be with the system files. I backed up my data, performed a clean install of Windows 10, and installed the necessary drivers. However, the USB and PS2 ports still did not work.

Conclusion

After exhausting all the potential solutions, I was unable to get the USB and PS2 ports working on the AsRock G41C-GS motherboard. It's possible that the USB controller is faulty, or there might be a hardware issue that cannot be resolved without replacing the motherboard.
