Vivaldi Tab Stack Pop-up No Longer Displays Multiple Columns
Vivaldi is a highly customizable web browser known for its innovative features and flexibility. One such feature is the tab stack, which allows users to group multiple tabs together. Until recently, hovering over a tab stack would display a pop-up with thumbnails of the tabs in a grid, with multiple columns depending on the number of tabs in the stack. However, this behavior has changed in a recent update, and the pop-up now only displays a single column of thumbnails.
Why the Change
The reason for this change is not entirely clear, but it is likely due to user feedback and usability testing. While the multi-column layout allowed for more thumbnails to be displayed at once, it could also be overwhelming and difficult to navigate. The new single-column layout is simpler and more intuitive, making it easier for users to find the tab they are looking for.
Customizing the Tab Stack Pop-up
Even with the change to a single-column layout, users still have options for customizing the tab stack pop-up. By right-clicking on a tab stack and selecting Tab Stack Options, they can choose to display the tab titles instead of thumbnails, or to display a list of the tabs in the stack. They can also adjust the size of the thumbnails and the delay before the pop-up appears.
Alternatives to the Tab Stack Pop-up
For users who prefer the multi-column layout of the tab stack pop-up, there are alternatives available. One option is to use the Tile Tabs feature, which can be accessed by right-clicking on a tab stack and selecting Tile Tabs. This will open all of the tabs in the stack in separate windows, arranged in a grid. Users can then navigate between the windows using keyboard shortcuts or by clicking on the windows.
Another option is to use a third-party extension, such as Tab Thumbnails or Tab Hover Cards. These extensions add a pop-up similar to the old tab stack pop-up, with multiple columns of thumbnails. However, they may not be as customizable as the built-in tab stack pop-up, and they may have an impact on performance.
While the change to a single-column layout for the tab stack pop-up may be disappointing for some users, it is ultimately a positive change that makes the browser more user-friendly. By simplifying the layout and making it easier to navigate, Vivaldi is continuing to prioritize user experience and customization. For users who still prefer the multi-column layout, there are alternatives available, such as the Tile Tabs feature or third-party extensions.
