Thunderbird Redirects Wrong Login Site for Email Accounts: How to Fix
Mozilla Thunderbird is a popular open-source email client, known for its flexibility and wide range of features. However, some users have reported an issue where Thunderbird keeps redirecting them to the wrong login site, particularly for Gmail accounts that get mistakenly redirected to the Outlook login page.
Understanding the Issue
When attempting to add a new email account in Thunderbird, the email client may automatically assume the account type based on the email address domain. For example, if you're adding a @gmail.com account, Thunderbird might assume it's an Outlook account and redirect you to the Outlook login page instead of the Gmail login page.
Manually Selecting Account Type
To avoid the incorrect redirection, you can manually select the account type during the setup process. When prompted to choose an account type, select IMAP or POP instead of the suggested option. Then, enter your Gmail address and password as usual.
Configuring Account Settings
If Thunderbird still redirects you to the wrong login page, you can manually configure the account settings:
- Go to
Tools > Account Settings. - Select your Gmail account and click
Account Actions > Server Settings. - Make sure the
Server Nameis set toimap.gmail.com(for IMAP) orpop.gmail.com(for POP). - Check the box for
Use secure connection (SSL). - Click
OKto save the changes.
Updating Thunderbird
If the issue persists, make sure your Thunderbird is up-to-date. Go to Help > About Thunderbird to check for updates. Outdated versions might have bugs that could cause the redirection issue.
Reinstalling Thunderbird
If updating Thunderbird doesn't solve the problem, try reinstalling the application. Uninstall Thunderbird, restart your computer, and then download and install the latest version from the official Mozilla website.
Checking Firewall and Antivirus Settings
In some cases, your firewall or antivirus software might be blocking or interfering with Thunderbird's connection to Gmail. Check your security software's settings to ensure Thunderbird is allowed to access the internet.
Adding Gmail as a POP Account
If none of the above solutions work, you can try adding your Gmail account as a POP account instead of an IMAP account. This method bypasses the redirection issue, but note that it might not sync your emails as efficiently as an IMAP account.
