Android Auto has come a long way since its initial release, which only allowed for navigation and media applications. However, Google has been gradually opening up the system to include other types of apps. At the latest Google I/O, the company announced that popular apps such as Zoom, Webex, and Microsoft Teams would be available on Android Auto.
The first two apps, Zoom and Webex, began rolling out in September, and we now know when the last one will be available. The Microsoft 365 roadmap shows that it will be possible to join meetings and make calls with Microsoft Teams on Android Auto starting in February. This means that it will have taken almost a year since the announcement for the feature to become available to users.
Google had previously announced that it would allow apps like Zoom on Android Auto, with a preview version of the app available in September. This means that users can now see and join their pending meetings and participate in them using the audio of their car. Soon, users will be able to do the same with Microsoft Teams calls.
The Zoom and Webex apps started rolling out on Android Auto in September, although the deployment is not yet complete worldwide. According to Microsoft's official development plan, the apps should be available to everyone by February 2024. The plan states that "Teams on Android Auto allows you to easily join meetings from the calendar view, quickly call your quick contacts or recent calls on your Android phone." This means that users can use the app not only to join meetings but also to make calls to their colleagues.
The Microsoft Teams app is already compatible with Android Auto, but with a messaging app template based on notifications of new messages received on the mobile. However, in February, this should change to show the calendar view with upcoming meetings, allowing users to join a meeting directly from the car's interface.
