Mark Zuckerberg's Secret Mega Mansion in Hawaii
It's the fight club. We're not talking about the fight club. This phrase, a nod to the famous movie by D. Fincher, has nothing to do with dystopian cinema, secret societies, or exclusive clubs ruled by secrecy. Instead, it refers to Koolau Ranch, an immense mansion being built on a remote island in Hawaii. If David claims that he and the rest of the employees working on the construction must maintain the same code of silence as Brad Pitt and Edward Norton in Fincher's film, it's because of the nature of the project. Koolau Ranch will be none other than Mark Zuckerberg's new mega mansion, a ranch as exclusive as it is luxurious, selective, and secretive.
Movement in Kaua'i
Kaua'i is no longer just a quiet Hawaiian island with its picturesque beaches and landscapes that have earned it the nickname "Garden Island." In a part of the island, which is smaller than Gran Canaria, it is common to see hundreds of workers, trucks carrying materials, and other construction machinery. Surprisingly, Kaua'i has made headlines in international media outlets such as Wired, The Telegraph, and The New York Post. This is quite remarkable for an island with a population of only 73,300 people and that had only two traffic lights in 1973.
The reason for this sudden activity and international attention is its new tenant: Mark Zuckerberg, co-founder of Facebook, CEO of Meta, one of the wealthiest individuals on the planet, and undoubtedly one of the most influential and controversial figures in the tech industry. Despite his efforts to keep the project secret, the media coverage and the sheer size of Koolau Ranch have generated interest beyond the island.
A $270 Million Complex
We have been able to learn about Zuckerberg's plans in Kaua'i thanks to the extensive research conducted by Guthrie Scrimgeour for Wired. Scrimgeour interviewed former employees, professionals involved in the project, and people in Zuckerberg's circle. With all this information, along with the documents and blueprints Scrimgeour had access to through public records, an approximate description of Koolau Ranch has been compiled. The result is worthy of the mega mansion club that other magnates have accustomed us to.
Koolau Ranch will cost at least $270 million. The important detail is that this figure only includes the cost of the land, valued at around $170 million, and the main construction, which accounts for another $100 million. This amount is significant enough to stand out in Kaua'i's real estate market, where Zuckerberg's project is notable for both its high cost and secrecy.
Huge, Luxurious, and Self-Sufficient
Three adjectives that accurately describe what Meta's CEO has in mind for Kaua'i. Let's start with "huge." Wired estimates that the complex covers nearly 500 hectares and includes a 460-square-meter underground shelter and a dozen buildings with at least 30 bedrooms and 30 bathrooms. The complex is centered around two mansions with a total area comparable to a football field, complete with elevators, a professional kitchen, and workspaces such as offices and conference rooms.
These are not the only details that have been revealed about the ambitious Koolau Ranch. The complex will be anything but conventional, starting with its gigantic bunker. The plans include 11 treehouse-like homes built in a nearby wooded area, forming a sort of disc. What makes this scene even more curious is that these homes are connected by rope bridges, allowing residents to move from one to another without touching the ground.
More than just an XXL house, Koolau Ranch's size and amenities suggest that Zuckerberg is looking for more than just a place to live with his wife and children. Wired explains that even though the complex is not yet fully completed, the magnate has already held corporate meetings there.
To ensure that he and his guests don't miss out on any of the services they would enjoy in a big city, Koolau Ranch includes a gym, sauna, jacuzzi, swimming pool, tennis court, guest houses, and operational buildings. It even features a large water reservoir with a diameter of 16 meters and a height of five meters, along with a pumping system, allowing the complex to be self-sufficient. Food is also not a problem, as the vast property includes agricultural crops and livestock.
Grand... and Secretive
There is one more adjective that perfectly describes the complex: secretive. Zuckerberg and his team have taken great care to ensure that the entire Koolau Ranch project remains as discreet as possible. This is no easy task, given the media attention surrounding the entrepreneur and the sheer size of the project. As one former employee named David admits, the staff working on the property is strictly forbidden from sharing any details about their work. "It's the fight club. We don't talk about the fight club."
Carpenters, electricians, painters, and other workers must pass through security checkpoints and are bound by confidentiality agreements. Rumors circulate among the staff that sharing information about the project, even through social media or among colleagues from other teams, could cost them their jobs. "The only other time this happens is when protected military installations are being built. It is very rare for a private project to include a confidentiality agreement," explains a construction worker on the island to Wired. The project's secrecy is also aided by its remote location on the north coast and the fact that the ownership of Kaua'i is divided among a dozen companies, according to the American publication.
Leak-Proof and Attack-Proof
If accessing information about the complex is difficult, getting inside is even more challenging. Koolau Ranch is monitored by an extensive network of cameras, with one of its operational buildings alone housing over 20 cameras. The mansion is also designed to be attack-proof. If cameras and security guards weren't enough, it features a 460-square-meter underground shelter with a reinforced metal door made of concrete. Access to this shelter is through a tunnel that connects the mansions.
In addition to the camera system, Koolau Ranch will have soundproof enclosures and doors in some rooms that blend in with the surrounding walls. This elaborate setup has sparked the imagination of the island's residents, who speculate about Zuckerberg's plans to build a bunker or an "underground city."
A Controversial Project
Not everything about Koolau Ranch is about luxury, secrecy, and big numbers. Wired reveals that the project has also faced its share of controversy. Zuckerberg started acquiring properties on Kaua'i back in 2014, and the process has not always been smooth, resulting in lawsuits and auctions. In mid-2020, a petition was launched to "prevent Mark Zuckerberg from colonizing Kaua'i," which gathered over a million signatures. The Meta CEO has also faced criticism from local journalists.
