ESXi on VMware Workstation and VLANs

ESXi is a powerful virtualization platform that allows you to run multiple operating systems on a single physical server. VMware Workstation, on the other hand, is a desktop virtualization software that enables you to run multiple virtual machines on your computer. In this article, we will explore how to set up ESXi on VMware Workstation and configure VLANs to enhance network security and performance.

What is a VLAN?

A VLAN, or Virtual Local Area Network, is a logical network that allows you to segment a physical network into multiple virtual networks. Each VLAN operates as if it were a separate physical network, even though it shares the same physical infrastructure.

VLANs provide several benefits:

• Improved Security: VLANs isolate network traffic, preventing unauthorized access to sensitive data.

Setting up ESXi on VMware Workstation

Before we can configure VLANs, we need to set up ESXi on VMware Workstation. Follow these steps:

1. Download the ESXi ISO image from the VMware website.
2. Launch VMware Workstation and click on New Virtual Machine.
3. Select Custom (advanced) and click Next.
4. Choose the Installer disc image file (iso) option and browse to the location where you saved the ESXi ISO image. Click Next.
5. Enter a name for your virtual machine and select a location to save it. Click Next.
6. Specify the number of processors and the amount of memory you want to allocate to the virtual machine. Click Next.
7. Choose Use bridged networking and click Next.
8. Click on Customize Hardware to configure additional settings like storage and network adapters.
9. Click Close and then click Finish to create the virtual machine.
10. Power on the virtual machine and follow the on-screen instructions to install ESXi.

Configuring VLANs on ESXi

Once you have ESXi installed on VMware Workstation, you can configure VLANs to enhance network security and performance. Follow these steps:

1. Power off the virtual machine running ESXi.
2. Right-click on the virtual machine and select Settings.
3. In the Hardware tab, click on Add to add a new network adapter.
4. Choose Custom: Specific virtual network and select the desired VLAN from the dropdown menu.
5. Click OK to save the changes.
6. Power on the virtual machine.
7. Log in to the ESXi console.
8. Navigate to the Configuration tab and select Networking.
9. Click on Add Networking and choose Virtual Machine Port Group.
10. Enter a name for the port group and select the VLAN ID that matches the VLAN you configured for the virtual network adapter.
11. Click Next and choose the physical network adapter to connect the port group to.
12. Click Finish to create the port group.
