The Fear of Failure: NVIDIA's CEO and the Constant Pressure to Succeed
Many of the companies that currently dominate the stock market owe their success to the determination and dedication of one or two founders who fought against all odds to make their small project grow. This dynamic gave rise to companies like Apple, Microsoft, and Nvidia, all of which are currently valued at trillions of dollars. However, there is something special about Nvidia: its CEO is still one of the founders and he continues to fear that the company could go bankrupt at any moment.
Nvidia, currently valued at 1.19 trillion dollars, was not always a giant in the tech industry. It started as a semiconductor start-up for graphic rendering in the mid-90s. Today, Nvidia is at the forefront of the Artificial Intelligence revolution, with a 200% increase in value in 2023. However, its CEO, Jensen Huang, still worries about the possibility of the company going bankrupt.
The "Huang Paranoia"
Jensen Huang has been leading Nvidia for three decades, during which the company has faced bankruptcy several times. This situation has left a lasting impact on its CEO, who constantly feels that any wrong move could cause the company to lose its position in the market and ultimately lead to its demise. "I think when you build a company from scratch, you have experienced real adversity and have come close to shutting down several times, that feeling stays with you," said Huang.
The Pressure of Being the Champion
In any competition, the current champion is under constant pressure to maintain their title against the relentless attacks from other competitors. The same is true in the business world, and according to Nvidia's CEO, this pressure is constant. "It's a restless attitude. I don't wake up proud and confident. I wake up worried and restless," Huang jokingly said.
"I don't think it's the kind of paranoia that needs treatment or therapy. I don't think there are competitors trying to put us out of business. I know they are. So, I live in this partially desperate condition [to stay ahead] and partially aspirational condition [to innovate]," said Jensen Huang, referring to the competition with TSMC for leadership in semiconductor manufacturing.
Thriving Under Pressure
The CEO of Nvidia revealed in an interview on the Acquired podcast that he performs better when faced with adversity. He said, "I can think better when I'm faced with adversity. My heart rate goes down," and added, "I think during adversity, you're more focused, and when you're more focused, you can perform better."
As the 30th richest person on Bloomberg's list, with an estimated fortune of around $41.6 billion, the millionaire founder of Nvidia likes to maintain that tension at work where it feels like he's on the brink of losing everything, to stay alert. He mentioned that he enjoys coming home at night and telling his wife that he had saved the company. "Maybe it wasn't true, but I'd like to think so."
The Ignorance of the Entrepreneur
During his speech, the CEO highlighted how incredibly tough it has been to bring Nvidia to its current position and admitted that if he had known how difficult it would be, he might not have done it. Huang explained, "It's not that everything we've done hasn't been worth it. I'm very proud of it all. But the effort and sacrifice required to achieve it have been immense, and I don't think I could do it again."
"The ignorance of the entrepreneur is an attitude that I try to maintain today. It's an approach where you don't consider how hard the process will be. You only consider if they can do it, then you can do it too. It's an attitude that helps you achieve your goal, but it's completely wrong because it's much harder than you imagine," Huang concluded.
Nvidia's success story is a testament to the determination and resilience of its CEO, Jensen Huang. His constant fear of failure and his ability to thrive under pressure have played a significant role in the company's rise to the top. As Nvidia continues to lead the way in the field of Artificial Intelligence, it is clear that Huang's relentless pursuit of success has been a driving force behind the company's achievements.
